New Program to Help AIDS Patients Afford Health Insurance

When the AIDS epidemic fist hit the United States in the early 1980s it was a death sentence. Through the years the development of the antiretroviral drugs meant that a person infected with AIDS could manage their chronic illness and extend their life. But, the antiretroviral drugs are very expensive, costing almost $15,000 each year. Many people with AIDS are either uninsured or underinsured, and the ones that are working often cannot afford the high cost of employee commercial healthcare insurance.

AIDS Drug Assistance Program

The AIDS Drug Assistance Program is a new program that is funded to provide free medications to people who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDs. The drug assistance program will extend the life of the HIV positive person and treat the symptoms of the person already diagnosed with AIDS. After many years of lobbying, Connecticut has launched its AIDS Drug Assistance Program, as has New York, New Jersey, Florida and other states.

There are several components to the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)
